As any significant honors show nears, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
