Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
