Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
